Software Freedom Day 2010
This year Software Freedom Day 2010 is taking place on friday september 17th 2010 at the Centrum Wiskunde & Informatica (CWI), the national researchinstitute for mathematics and theoretical computer science on the Science Park in Amsterdam (location on OpenStreetMap). The CWI gave birth to the .NL internetdomein, where the first top level domain was being registered by system administrator Piet Beertema, and where he also made the first connection to a foreign country of the NSFnet (which would later on become the Internet) between the United States and the netherlands. The CWI plays a active role in open internet standards including W3C and has always been involved in the Dutch open source community. Like for example the programming language Python has been developed at the CWI. So this promises to become a very special meeting! Keep an eye on this website for the latest updates.
What is going to take place?Speakers from the government, business and education will give a presentation about the how, what and why of open source software and free software, and related subjects. Many projects in the area of open source software, open standards, open document formats, open content, open geodata, open hardware, open media, open etc. will give a presentation, and are represented on the Software Freedom Day-bazaar on friday september 17th. Entrance is free; we appreciate it very much if you register yourself before attending. History Software Freedom Day in the NetherlandsFriday september 17th, allready for the seventh time, a Software Freedom Day is taking place in the Netherlands. In 2004 and 2005 this had taken place at TOSti Tilburg (The Open Source test initiative Tilburg) in Tilburg! In 2006 and 2007 (video's Source21.nl in Utrecht in the Liefland College, where we were allowed to use the spaces of the NLLGG (Dutch Linux Users Group), in 2008 the Dutch Software Freedom Day was taking place Baarn (together with the OpenStreetMap Usersday 2008) and a week later, there was another Software Freedom Day taking place Utrecht (organised by Software Freedom Day Netherlands in cooperation with the NLLGG and the NLUUG (Netherlands Local Unix User Group), and in 2009 there was a Software Freedom Day 2009 and the OpenStreetMap Usersday 2009 "autumn edition" taking place at Gendo, in the old building of the Dutch newspaper Volkskrant, at the Wibautstraat 150, Amsterdam.
About Software Freedom DaySoftware Freedom Day is a global celebration of free software, open-source software and related subjects. The goal of this day is to educate the worldwide public about free software and open source software about good quality software in education, at the government and in business. Teams of volunteers organise every year worldwide in their local area activities to educate the public about these technologies. In the Netherlands Software Freedom Day's are being organised every year since 2004. |

Rascal is a domain specific language for source code analysis and manipulation a.k.a. meta-programming. It is currently being developed and tested at CWI. No formal release has been made yet, but we do provide alpha quality "previews" on our Download page. . 
We understand the complexity of code and policy as the most fundamental security problem shared by modern general-purpose operating systems. Because of high functional demands and dynamic workloads, however, this complexity cannot be avoided. But it can be organized. Genode is a novel OS architecture that is able to master complexity by applying a strict organizational structure to all software components including device drivers, system services, and applications. The Genode OS framework is the effort to advance the Genode OS architecture as a community-driven open-source project. . 
Despite the amounts of public funding devoted to both cultural heritage and ICT infrastructure, online access to even the most important aspects of our past is still limited and highly fragmented. The objective of this project is the development of a set of e-culture demonstrators providing multimedia access to distributed collections of cultural heritage objects. The demonstrators are intended to show various levels of syntactic and semantic interoperability between collections and various types of personalized and context--dependent presentation generation. . 
SMIL (Synchronized Multimedia Integration Language, pronounced "smile") is a language for describing interactive synchronized multimedia distributed on the Web. It is an easy-to-author XML-compliant format similar in syntax to HTML. SMIL 2.0 became an official W3C recommendation on in August of 2001. SMIL provides Web users with: Easily-defined basic timing relationships, fine-tuned synchronization, spatial layout, direct inclusion of non-text and non-image media, hyperlink support for time-based media, adaptiveness to varying user and system characteristics.
